Police nab 127 suspects, recover 26 vehicles

Suspected robbers in Rivers state
THE Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday paraded 127 suspected armed robbers, cultists and kidnappers.

Those paraded at the State Police Command in Port Harcourt were 45 armed robbery suspects, eight suspected kidnappers and 74 persons alleged to be involved in cultism.

Different arms and ammunition ranging from pump-action riffles and AK-47 to locally-made pistols, double-barrelled guns and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.

Also recovered were 26 vehicles allegedly used for “illicit operations” within the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said he was determined to rid Rivers State of criminals.

Ezike added that he observed that cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery and homicide cases were increasing and vowed to end the trend.

He added that the command’s determination to fight criminals to a standstill had yielded result as security operatives attached to the command located some of the suspects’ hideouts and arrested them.

He said, “In my inaugural address, I said my focus would be to provide quality service to the people of the state, fight violent crimes with vigour, partner with other security services, respect the rights of the citizens, abhor corrupt practices, promote professionalism and secure peace, security and safety for the state and its people.

“We have taken steps to address major security challenges in the state. Some of our achievements are arrest of armed robbers, kidnappers and cultist, recovery of firearms and stolen vehicles and rescue of kidnapped victims.

“For instance, on July 7, 2015, a three-man armed robbery gang operating with black Highlander Jeep was encountered by the police after robbing a man of over N2m. One of the robbers was arrested, while others escaped.

“Their operational vehicle was recovered and when searched, two AK-47 rifle with four magazines loaded with 92 rounds of 9.62mm ammunition as well as the money were recovered.

“Within the past 24 days, the SARS team arrested 45 suspected armed robbers, recovered seven AK-47 rifles, one SMG, three pump-action guns, 18 locally-made guns, 20 magazines with over 400 rounds of ammunition and 69 cartridges. Twenty six vehicles were also recovered.”

The state police commissioner pointed out that the achievements recorded so far by his command was as a result of the collaboration and support from government and the people of the state.

Ezike said more policemen had been deployed to the streets in major areas in order to help in tracking down crimes in the state.

There is nobody who will be above the law in Nigeria - Osinbajo

VP Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said on Wednesday the Muhammadu Buhari administration would not spare anyone who went against the law as it would propagate the rule of law in all its programmes.

He said this when officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers paid him a visit at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. Osinbajo said;

"There is nobody who will be above the law in Nigeria, no matter who you are. You cannot use party. You cannot use the association; you cannot use position in government. Nobody is above the law. That is the first move and I want us to support that. Let us not say that if a person, who is one of our own, is being held to account for his wrong-doing, so long as the person is being held to account according to law, we must not support such a person. We must say ‘let the law take its course’. That is how good societies are run, there is no other way. If we see fairness, let us describe it as fairness; let us support what is right and good for our country. And our country is going to call upon us time and time again. We are the elite of this country. There is no other elite. You can’t look anywhere else for elite."

The Vice President added that the NURTW was an important stakeholder in the road transport network with as much national outlook as the Nigerian Army. He said that the union was one of the few associations with the grassroots in its reach because most Nigerians could access it. He said the union had a great role to play in national development.

Cross River Chief of Staff denies assault claim, alleges blackmail

Yesterday a man named Jeremiah Ashang accused the Chief of Staff to Cross River state governor of assault. The man accused has now released a statement explaining his side of the story

The Chief of Staff to Cross River State Governor, Martin Prim has decried allegations of assault made against him by one Jeremiah Ashang as a cocktail of lies. Orim said the entire account of the alleged assault as narrated by Ashang is riddled with half truths, contradictions and outright falsehood.

He said this was a clear case of the aggressor playing the victim, saying it was Ashang and his gang who actually assaulted his driver.

"I neither assaulted nor ordered the beating of Ashang or anybody else for that matter. This man is clearly out to blackmail me. But in his hurry to tar me and malign my person, he exposed himself for who he truly is. A liar.

"While in one breath he claimed I ordered his my security details to beat him, tie him up and bundle him into a Hilux van, in another breath he said he fled for his dear life after I purportedly ordered that he and his cousin should be shot. I am wondering how a man who was supposedly tied up and thrown into a Hilux van, could have made such an escape."

Orim said it was actually Ashang and his gang that actually assaulted his driver after they forced their way into his hotel room, claiming the said room the hotel staff checked in his driver, was reserved for them.

The Chief of Staff who said he refused to be dragged into the confusion that ensued thereafter, accused Asang of cheap blackmail.
