Tenson: 47 Boko Haram prisoners arrive Anambra state

There was tension in Anambra state yesterday, following reports that 47 Boko Haram prisoners have been relocated to Ekwulobia Prison in Aguata local government area of the state, Vanguard reports.

Hundreds of youths took to the street over the weekend when the rumour first broke about the alleged relocation, leading to the closure of major markets in  the state.

It was reported that prisons officials at Ekwulobia Prison did not show any signs that new inmates were brought in.

However, investigations revealed that 47 Boko Haram prisoners were brought to Ekwulobia at midnight on Sunday, June 28, under tight security.

People whose relatives are serving sentences in the medium security prison have expressed concern over the development, saying their relatives might be in grave danger given the record of Boko Haram.

The senior special assistant on media to the state governor, James Eze, in a statement said that the governor is not aware of the relocation arrangement.

Eze noted that Governor Obiano is concerned about the development and has sought and received assurances from the highest authorities that the issue would be resolved soon.

Meanwhile, traders in the commercial town of Onitsha have reiterated that they will continue their protest over the alleged relocation of prisoners from the northern part of the country to Ekwulobia Prison.

US gay marriage: Robert Mugabe asks Obama to marry him

Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has challenged US President Barack Obama by asking his hand in marriage. His comment comes at the back of the legalization of gay marriage in the US by the Supreme Court.

During Mugabe's weekly radio interview with Zimbabwe’s national radio last Saturday, he said:

“I’ve just concluded since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance thus if it becomes necessary , I shall travel to Washington, D.C. , get down on my knee and ask Obama’s hand. I can’t understand how these people dare to defy Christ’s explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind from sodomy.''

Mugabe said the American Government is run by pervert, Satan-worshipers who insult the Great American nation.

He reportedly added
"That the American tradition and heritage was based on lofty Christian principles, but to the detriment of this great nation, America’s corrupt political elite is acting according to their diabolic whims".

Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage, the first ever from a sitting president, came amid growing pressure for the president to clarify his previously muddled opinion, as two senior members of his administration announced personal support for gay marriage and a day after voters in North Carolina approved a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

110,000 living with HIV/AIDS in Taraba – NEPWHAN

No fewer than 110,849 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Taraba, Mr. Edward Ogenyi, National Coordinator, Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, said on Tuesday.

Ogenyi made this disclosure in Jalingo at the commencement of a five-day ‘Demand Generation Activities for HIV and AIDS Service Uptake’ in Taraba.

He said the activities marked the first phase of implementation of the President’s Comprehensive Response Plan for HIV and AIDS, funded by NACA/SURE-P HIV/AIDS Programme, launched in July, 2013.

“Taraba HIV prevalence is 10.5 per cent which is far above National average of 4.1 per cent according to the 2013 National Reproductive Health Survey report.

“One of the major aims of PCRP is to avail 80 million Nigerians the opportunity to know their HIV status.

“But due to limited resources, Taraba and Abia are selected for the implementation of NACA/SURE-P HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support,” he said.

Ogenyi explained that out of the 110,849 people living with HIV and AIDS in Taraba, only 27,000 were currently receiving treatment.

He said out of the national prevalence of 3.5 million, only 700,000 were currently on treatment.

The coordinator urged Taraba House of Assembly to prioritise HIV and AIDS in its budgetary allocation for 2016 and beyond.

He said this would enable the state government take over the ownership of the response to serve as a model for other states in the country.

Team Leader, Taraba Project Implementation on HIV/AIDS Response, Dr. Musa Obadiah, said the state government had approved N500 million to fight the scourge in 2015.

The representative of NEPWHAN in the State Action Committee on AIDS Board, Mr. Abraham Johnson, said the committee was doing everything possible to ensure that more patients access treatment in the state.

He urged the people to go to the nearest health facility to know their status in order to tackle the pervasive prevalence rate in the state.

Police arraign manager for stealing N2m beverages

The police have arraigned a warehouse manager, Akokhia Joseph, before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing beverages estimated at N2.2m, belonging to his employer, one Vivian Osian.

It was learnt that Akokhia was to give the goods out based on orders from the management of the company.

He allegedly diverted some of the goods, replacing them in the warehouse with empty cartons.

He was said to have also allegedly deleted stock data from the computers to cover up the crime.

It was learnt that several times, goods had been discovered missing in the warehouse, but Akokhia usually returned the monetary value of the goods, claiming that he later found and sold them.

Our correspondent learnt that after his employer noticed some inconsistencies in the computer data and the missing warehouse goods, an auditor was invited to analyse the records, leading to the discovery of the theft.

The 24-year-old was arraigned on Monday on one count of stealing.

The police told the court that Joseph stole from the warehouse between September 1, 2014 and January 12, 2015.

The charge read, “That you, Akokhia Joseph, between September 1, 2014, and January 12, 2015, at Ojuelegba Road, Surulere, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal Nestle products valued at N2,264,597, property of one Vivian Osian, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 285(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011”

The defendant pleaded not guilty, while his defence counsel, Saka Bello, applied for his bail in liberal terms.

The Magistrate, O. A. Komolafe, admitted him to bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum.

He said, “Both sureties must have the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency ID card. One of the sureties must be a relative, while the other must be a level 10 civil servant working with the Lagos State Government.”

The case was adjourned till July 27.

South Sudan army raped, burnt girls alive – UN

15-yr-old SSS student commits suicide in Imo

OWERRI – A 15-year-old senior secondary school student, identified as Paschal Egbosimba, last weekend committed suicide at Uratta in Owerri North local council area of Imo State.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased, who hailed from Ntueke, Ideato South local government  area of the state, was living with his mother and siblings around Toronto Junction, Uratta, before the incident.

“Paschal was a senior secondary school student of Passion Model Secondary School, Egbu. He used an electric extension cable to hang himself from a ceiling fan, when his mother was away for a night vigil,” a witness who pleaded anonymity, recounted.
Although the remains of late Paschal had been removed to an unknown morgue when Vanguard arrived the scene, some sympathizers were seen taking turns to console the anguished mother.

The late boy’s mother, who wept uncontrollably, was heard saying she never scolded the deceased, adding that there was no reason for him to have hanged himself.
Another sympathizer reasoned that the incident was as shocking as it had remained a mystery.

“The incident was very shocking. It has remained a mystery till now, especially as the young boy was neither troublesome nor noisy,” a source said.

When Vanguard visited Owerri North Divisional Police Headquarters, Uratta, for enquiries, a police man on duty, who spoke on strict grounds of anonymity, confirmed the incident, adding that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, had already visited the scene

Now, Mary can marry Maria anywhere in US

In the Monday, June 15, edition of the Vanguard, an interview granted the Vanguard by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, was published in which, unlike the beloved bishop I know him to be, he astonishingly claimed that “we elected a President not to look for scapegoats. We elected the President to get a job done.”

As a Catholic who understands his faith very deeply, I am quite happy to completely disagree with Bishop Kukah and indeed I go so far as to condemn his submission as not only shamefully inappropriate but indeed entirely out of tune with the blessed theology of the Holy Roman Catholic Church of God.

In the first place, I was quite taken aback by my beloved Bishop’s choice of language which unmistakably resembles that of a politician than that of a reverend man of the cloth. I wonder how Bishop Kukah constructed what President Buhari was elected to do. I very much doubt that Bishop Kukah voted for Buhari and I therefore find his pretension as one of those who voted for him utterly shameful.

At any rate even if he did, he is not the only one who voted for Buhari and the vast majority of those of us who made him our President certainly voted him to amongst other things fight corruption, something Bishop Kukah, against Catholic theology, is determined must not happen!

Clearly, like many ridiculously clueless individuals with a laughably poor conceptualization of proper governance, Bishop Kukah’s understanding of what it will take to reform Nigeria is faulty. That is the best I can do for my bishop; otherwise, I would accuse him of knowing the truth and for reason’s best known to him, he has chosen to embrace falsehood.

I am simply sick and tired of the enemies of Buhari’s government who keep insisting on lecturing our President and the rest of us what we elected him to do. What are our President’s main credentials anyway? If Buhari will not fight corruption, what else is he supposed to do?

Any President who refuses to fight corruption is a failure, a nitwit and a bastard and by shamelessly trying to sell this dummy, Bishop Kukah is obviously trying to hoodwink our President into failing so that in 2019, he, Kukah, can turn back and scold us for not returning former President Jonathan as President.

I am not fooled by my beloved Bishop’s pretensions. He is obviously a Jonathan supporter unable to key into seeing the hand of God in even the least likely place. If ever Kukah voted, he would not have voted for Buhari and I have many such friends who proved unable to grow up and maturely eschew sentiments to vote for change. That of course is their right. What no one is entitled to do is to pontificate from a position of prejudice pretending to be an unbiased friend.

If there is a particular thing President Buhari was elected to do, it is to fight corruption. That is why we voted him. We know that if no one else will tackle this national cancer, Buhari will certainly not shy away from that divine duty. How will he make himself popular with the common people if he does not catch them the thieves who robbed them blind, deaf, dumb and speechless? What will be left of Buhari’s credibility if he behaves like the very comical Obasanjo, the unfortunately lackluster Yar’Adua or the utterly clueless Jonathan? How might change be effected in Nigeria if corruption, the number one impediment to change, is not removed?

What in the world does my beloved Bishop, Kukah mean by insisting the President must deliver without fighting corruption? Who can deliver in Nigeria without tackling corruption? Fighting corruption to the barest minimum equates to delivering in this corruption ravaged land and it is a bizarre shame that anyone, much more a bishop will appoint himself a public defender of corruption!

I insist that Bishop Kukah did not vote for President Buhari. As for those of us who insisted he must be our President when it mattered most, it is certainly our forte to lecture the likes of Bishop Kukah, exactly what we elected our beloved President to do. We made him President to fight corruption and by so doing to plug the garish loopholes in the system that makes it impossible for our people to have light, education, healthcare, food, security and sundry other fundamental human rights. It is not for Bishop Kukah of all persons to tell us what we elected our own President to do. We are the ones to tell him.
For your information, dear Bishop, we elected President Buhari to seek ye first the defeat of corruption that all other things may be added unto us by sweet Jesus our Lord and God. By dissuading him from this heavenly duty, Bishop Kukah has merely exposed himself as a religious bigot uncomfortable with a Muslim as his President. If nothing else, rising above such prejudice against others is the test of being a Catholic and I am quite proud to be such a Catholic whether Bishop Kukah likes it or not.

N192m land fraud: Ex-FCT minister’s aide remanded in prison

Abuja — For allegedly aiding and abetting land fraud for about two years, a former Chief of Staff to the Federal Territory Minister, Yau Mohammed Gital, has been remanded at the Kuje prisons.

Justice Abubakar Talba of the FCT High Court, Gudu issued the order for the remand of the suspect and his accomplices who were alleged to have used their positions to demand and receive various sums of money amounting to N192 million under the pretence of securing land allocations for unsuspecting Nigerians.

Gital was charged along one Shuaibu Yakubu, Jibril Tahir and Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before the judge on a 10-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence, conspiracy and forgery.

The accused persons reportedly swindled unsuspecting land applicants of the huge amount, promising to use their positions to secure easy land allocations from the FCDA for them, a promise that turned out to be false.

However, when the charges were read to the suspects in court, they all pleaded not guilty and asked for speedy trial in the case.

One of the charges slammed on the suspects reads: “That you, Yau Mohammed Gital, being the Chief of Staff to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and member of the Land Allocation Committee, Federal Capital Territory Administration; Shuaibu Yakubu, being a former Special Assistant to the former Chief of Staff; Jibril M. Tahir, being the Managing Director of Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited and Jibmir Ventures Nigeria Limited sometimes between September 2012 and March 2014 in Abuja within the Jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, with intent to defraud, conspired to do an illegal act, to wit: obtain monies by false pretences from various unsuspecting persons under the false pretence that the said monies were for the processing/facilitation of land allocation by the Federal Capital Development Authority which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”
But counsel to the accused persons, Nura Imam, urged the court to admit them to bail while awaiting trial.

But disagreeing with them, Justice Bello ordered the accused remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till July 2, 2015 for ruling on the bail application.

We strangled him to death, says killers of FUTA’s former VC

Akure—The two domestic staff of late former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Professor Albert Ilemobade, said yesterday that they  strangled him to death because they wanted to make good money by stealing and selling of his RAV 4 sport utility vehicle, SUV.

Parading the suspects, including the night guard, Daniel Ita, 24, and driver Olayemi Bamitale, 36, at Ondo State Police headquarters, ýpolice said they were on the trail of other accomplices.

The parade of the suspects came as the 73-year-old wife of the deceased made a wish to the state police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, to allow her have a five minutes chat with the killers of her husband.

The suspects confessed that the late 78-year-old Professor of Veterinary Medicine was nice to them, but that they had to kill him because they needed “good money to survive,” by stealing the RAV 4 SUV.

Bamitale said he was sacked after he had earlier stolen the car and attempted to ýsell it, but could not do so because the car had a tracker.

The suspect said he came back after he was released from police detention on the order of the deceased. He said the detention annoyed him, so he connived with the guard to finish what he started.

He said he had to kill the professor to avoid failure for the second time.
The suspect said their plan was to flee to a neighbouring country after successfully selling off the car.

Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered from a top police chief that three other suspects were reportedly in police custody, but were not paraded alongside the two killers.

Vanguard learned that the other suspects include a herbalist, Dr. Okon, the housemaid and the woman who helped the deceased to recruit the night guard and driver.
‘I jumped on his  chest several times’

Giving graphic details of how the heinous crime was hatched, Bamitale said the plan to kill their master was perfected on a Saturday, while the killing was carried out on Sunday night.

He said: “After I was released from detention on the order of my master, I went back to make plan another plan. I asked Daniel the guard if he wants to make good money and he said yes. So I informed him of my new plan.

“Daniel was the one giving me information about what is happening in the house after I was sacked. He even paid for my transportation to Akure, because I have not been working since I was sent away.

“Daniel lured out Baba (late professor) by telling him that there was an electrical spark in the house after I had stationed myself near the kitchen entrance.
“Immediately Baba came out, I strangulated, while Daniel put cloth in his mouth to stop him from shouting.

“After a few minutes, Baba was still struggling. I then jumped on his chest several times and he died. We dragged him into the generator house and locked him inside the store that Sunday night.

“We left the house and locked the gate outside so that no one will suspect us. We went inside his bedroom and took the car key and some other items such as i-Pad, two phones, laptop, two bags and N7,000, which we used to fuel the car.

“We left Akure and headed to Lagos. We left with those items so that the car will not be tracked again because Baba used these gadgets to activate the tracking.”

He said they were stopped by some policemen at the entrance of Ijapo Estate, adding that the cops recognised Daniel as the security man to the deceased and were asked to go without further questioning.

Bamitale said they encountered some challenges after the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, booked them for invalid vehicle particulars and they had to sell the phones and i-Pad for N3,000 to pay for the release of the vehicle.

“We sold off the phones and laptops after being booked by FRSC officials. We sold the phones to retrieve the car from them before heading to Ijebu Ode with the hope of selling the car.”

‘Herbalist warned us against killing him’
Corroborating the driver, Daniel said he had earlier visited a herbalist, who warned against the killing of their boss but said Bamitale insisted that the man must be killed if they really wanted to make money without being caught by the police.

Daniel said Bamitale told him that if the professor was not killed, he would track the car again because he was unable to sell the car in his first attempt because the car was tracked and he had to return it.

Speaking before parading the suspects, the Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, said the killers were arrested while trying to sell the car at Iloti, Ogun State, to a buyer who became suspicious because of the ridiculous price tag they put on the SUV.

He said the buyer later alerted police, who rounded up the suspects where they were lodged.

Eke said the suspects were arrested with the car, marked GGE589 CF, and brought down to Ondo State Police Command.

He also disclosed that relatives of the deceased had identified the corpse and deposited it in the morgue.

He assured the public that the suspects and their accomplices would l be brought to book.

“They will be charged to court for murder, not kidnapping,” he said.

Adeseni Ilemobade, who is the last child, said all they wanted was justice. Adeseni asked the killers what their motive was despite all the family had done for them.

At least five dead in military plane crash — police

At least five people were killed Tuesday when an Indonesian military transport plane crashed into a city on Sumatra island and exploded in a ball of flames, police said.

Mardiaz Dwihananto, police chief of Medan city where the accident happened, told AFP that five to six bodies had so far been recovered from wreckage of the plane and buildings after the crash in a residential area.

“The bodies were in (the) debris of the plane and buildings… we are taking the bodies one by one by ambulance to Adam Malik hospital. We haven’t managed to evacuate all of the bodies.”

APC insists on Deputy Senate President Ekweremadu's removal

APC says Deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu who is a member of PDP must be removed from office. Senator Ekweremadu who was also the deputy senate president in the last administration, was elected deputy senate president during the controversial senate leadership election on June 9th which produced Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President.

A member of the ruling party who spoke on condition of anonymity with Punch, said Ekweremadu serving as deputy senate president will adversely affect President Buhari's administration.

He also added that President Buhari has refused to see Senator Saraki and Hon Dogara since their emergence as Senate President and Speaker.

"As deputy senate leader, Ekweremadu is automatically the Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment. This is a sensitive position that, statutorily, should not be held by the minority. Ekweremadu and his PDP co-travellers will hamper the policies of the Buhari government. By the virtue of Senate rules, a member of the minority is not supposed to be the deputy senate leader; so, he is occupying the post illegally. We know the body language of some of these elements to anti-corruption. Nigerians know the stance of Buhari on corruption and insecurity. These elements occupying positions in the National Assembly must be removed. Otherwise, this administration is dead on arrival. The President has refused to see Saraki and Dogara since they emerged as senate president and speaker respectively. Both Saraki and Dogara have done everything possible to see the President but he has shunned them because he is not happy about their conduct. You can see that the President has seen the Lawan group; this shows where his support lies” he said

FG-Okonjo-Iweala spent $2.1bn without approval

The National Economic Council, chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday accused former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, of spending $2.1bn from the Excess Crude Account without authorisation.

“We looked at the numbers for the Excess Crude Account. The last time the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, reported to the council, and it is in the minutes, she reported by November 2014 that we had $4.1 bn.
Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole told State House correspondents after the NEC’s 58th meeting in Abuja.

“Today, the Accountant-General Office reported we have $2.0bn. Which means the honourable minister spent $2.1bn without authority of the NEC and that money was not distributed to states, it was not paid to the three tiers of government,”

According to the economic council, the ‘unauthorised’ spending is among the several anomalies discovered in the management of the nation’s economy between 2012 and May 2015.

Within the period, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was said to have earned a total of N8.1 tn but remitted only N4.3tn.

Due to this reason, the Federal Government has constituted Oshiomhole, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai; Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel; and Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, into a panel to probe the NNPC and the ECA between 2012 and May, 2015.

Oshiomhole, el-Rufai, Emmanuel and the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, jointly briefed journalists at the end of the meeting.

Yari told journalists, through the Director of Funds, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. M.K. Dikwa, that council members received the report of the ECA and unremitted funds by the NNPC.

He said:
“On that line, a four-man committee consisting of the governors of Edo, Gombe, Kaduna and Akwa Ibom states was constituted to go through the books of the NNPC and Excess Crude as well as the Federation Account.

”The four-man committee will check the books of the NNPC, most especially the issue of excess crude and what is not remitted into the Federation Account.

“The Federal Government, in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria, will look inwards to see how to support and how much they will give to states, especially on the issue of outstanding salaries owed by the states and even the Federal Government.”

Explaining what happened at the NEC meeting, Oshiomhole said the NNPC and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation were compelled for the first time to provide information on the total sales of Nigeria’s crude from 2012 to May 2015.

The Edo governor said,
“We are talking about transparency; we are talking about change. And what we saw from those numbers, which I believe that Nigerians are entitled to know, is that whereas the NNPC claimed to have earned N8.1tn, what NNPC paid into the Federation Account from 2012 to May 2015 was N4.3tn.
“What it means is that the NNPC withheld and spent N3.8 tn.

“The major revelation here is that the entire federation, that is the Federal Government, the states and all the 774 local governments, the amount the NNPC paid into the Federation Account for distribution to these three tiers of government came to N4.3 tn and the NNPC alone took and spent N3.8tn.

“This means that the cost of running the NNPC is much more than the cost of running the Federal Government. That tells you how much is missing, what is mismanaged and what is stolen. There are huge figures.”

“If the Federal Government cannot spend without appropriation, why should any agency spend without appropriation.

“This is what the Constitution provided for and this is what President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to do; henceforth all money must go to the Federation Account.

“If you were doing that, you would not have a situation where the NNPC alone will spend N3.8trn and remit to the federal, states and local governments N4.3trn, which means NNPC is taking about 47 per cent and that explains all the leakages you are talking about.”

El-Rufai said the account was set up in order to be accountable such that every state and local government would know what they had in the account though they could not spend it.

He said,
“The Excess Crude Account is 52 per cent owned by the Federal Government and 48 per cent owned by the states and the local governments.

“So the decision of the NEC is to set up this committee of four to look at the operations of the Excess Crude Account and make recommendations to council on its future.

“The other thing the committee will do is to look at the operations of the Federation Account, particularly the shortfall and again come back to council with very clear recommendations as to what to do.

“We have not been given a time frame but as you can imagine state governments are under pressure, many of our state governments are unable to pay salaries on time without recourse to borrowing, so this is very important to us.

“This is an all-governors’ committee; we wear the shoes and we know where they pinch. So we are going to do this as quickly as possible.

“The next meeting of the council is on July 23; we hope to complete our work and be in a position to report to council on that day. So within the next one month, we will be done by God’s grace.”

Mum who killed her own 2 kids says she feels no remorse for killing them

Remember the story about the mother who killed two of her children and left their bodies in her kitchen freezer? Well, she  has pleaded guilty to their murders saying but says she feels no remorse for killing them. She said: “I don’t feel no remorse for the death of them demons.”

Mitchelle Blair 36, of Detroit, Michigan, without remorse admitted abusing her 13-year-old daughter Stoni Blair and nine-year-old son Stephen Berry, before their deaths. The bodies of the children were discovered in a deep freezer at her apartment on May 24 when bailiffs arrived to evict her. The mother has two surviving children aged eight and 17-years-old.
As she appeared in court, Blair said she killed her children after claiming they repeatedly “gang-raped” her youngest child.

Blair however, did not report the alleged sexual abuse and never witnessed it first hand.
“She raped my son,” Blair said about Stoni. “I intentionally killed her.”
“It wasn’t an accident?” Judge Dana Hathaway asked.
“No, not at all and if I had the chance to do it again, I would,” Blair said.
“I don’t feel no remorse for the death of them demons.”
Blair said she concealed the bodies so she could take care of her surviving children “as long as possible".nStephen died in August 2012, his sister May 2013.

The mother admitted strangling Stoni and Stephen before suffocating them by putting bags over their heads until they lost consciousness.

The autopsies revealed both children were malnourished, although Blair admitted only to starving Stoni, whom she fed one bowl of porridge a day.

Blair will receive a mandatory life sentence for the murders of her children after she voluntarily pleaded guilty.

Illness and concessions for breaking fast

A minor headache for example with no other conditions may not in many instances constitute a situation where a person can use the flexibility of the injusction of illness to skip Ramadan fast. Scholars agree that sickness that doesn’t cause any hardship cannot be used as an excuse for not fasting. Some of the conditions for breaking fast during Ramadan are as follows:

Intense illness that will further aggravate the illness if he or she were to fast, or that recovery will be delayed because of fasting.

Illness that causes great pain in fasting or it becomes unbearable with fasting.
“The person who is unable to fast because of a sickness which he hopes will go away is not obliged to fast. This applies if he encounters obvious difficulty in fasting and is not subject to the condition that he reaches a point when he is unable to fast. Rather our companions said: The permission not to fast is subject to the condition that fasting causes him difficulties that it is hard for him to bear.” —– [Al-Nawawi said in al-Majmoo’, 6/261]

Again, consider this: “With regard to the person who is slightly sick and who does not suffer any obvious hardship, it is not permissible for him to break his fast, and there is no difference of opinion among us concerning that. —– [Al-Nawawi – Al-Majmoo’, 6/261]
This means the sick person who is not affected by fasting, such as one who has a slight cold or headache, or a slight toothache and the like, is not permitted to break his fast. The injuction in Quran 2 verse 185 is refering to cronic illness that causes great pain and difficulty or that is unbearable. It depends on the individual and the nature of the illness. Almighty allah loves His concessions to be accepted just as He hates the disobedience of His commandments.

Again, Islam provides concessions to the aged or people who neither can fast nor can make up for the missed fasts later. Any of these people will have to feed one poor person a day as equivalent to one day fasting. The Quran states: “And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskeen (poor person) (for every day)” —– [Surah al-Baqarah 2:184]

23 lives lost to disaster in 3 months – NEMA

No fewer than 23 persons were lost   while 10 persons suffered various degrees of injuries to various disasters which occurred in the South-west zone in the past three months.

Also, about 200 fire incidents were jointly handled by fire fighters both at the states and federal level during this period.

The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, South West zone who disclosed this in a statement, yesterday, said out of the figure, seven children including a six months old baby were lost to an inferno.

The Zonal Office which was reviewing its activities from March to June, 2015 made the disclosure saying two suicide attempts were also recorded during this period.

NEMA South-west Information Officer, Ibrahim Farinloye said out of the suicide attempts, one person who climbed a television mast was rescued alive while the other one had died before help could reach him.

He gave kudos to Lagos State Fire Service for effective use of the State-of-the Art fire appliances acquired by the state government, to attend to about five fire calls daily.

The   emergency management lamented that in the period under review, a fire fighter was lost in active service while trying to rescue a victim in a local well.

This incident according to NEMA, really dampened the morale, passion and spirits of the fire fighters being the first calamity among them.

The zone called on government to further equip the fire fighters, “The state government, which has always applauded the diligence of the service personnel, is passionately implored to kindly look into further welfare of the fire fighters.”

In furtherance, NEMA said a total of 1,675 houses and 317   shops were affected by fire and windstorm across the zone. “Out of these, about 989 houses and 219 shops were affected in Lagos while about 430 houses were recorded in Oyo state and 280 houses and 85 shops were affected by fire and windstorm in Ogun.”

Based on the development, NEMA has provided relief materials to victims of various disasters in 15 communities- namely Odofin, Agboju and Alakija in Amuwo Odofin LGA, Epe, Ogunmodede, Epetedo, Odo Iragbusi, Iraye, Poka and Ketu communities in Epe Local Government Area, Ijede, Imota and Ikorodu in Ikorodu Local Government Area; Ajara, Ibereko and   Kakoa in Badagry Local Government Area; while Iba, Obadore, Abule Ado, Ije Ododo and Okokomaiko in Ojo Local Government areas, relief materials were delivered to Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, for distribution to the victims.

The victims of the windstorms and fire disasters in seven communities of Igboho in Oorelope Local Government Area; Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government Area; several communities in Afijio, Atiba and Oyo West Local Government Area have received through the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency.

In Ogun State, the victims of market fire at Igbo Aje market in Yewa South; Abeokuta South; Abeokuta North; Ayetoro and Topolo communities of Yewa North have received relief materials by NEMA through the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency. “NEMA is hereby appealing to Nigerians and corporate organisations to invest more in disaster risk reduction measures to secure their lives and property. Also, there is need for Nigerians to be more fire safety conscious in their course of their daily activities We should avoid leaving children alone in a locked-up apartment without neighbours having knowledge or access to the area in case of emergency. If we must use candle at any time, the elders must ensure that it is put off before leaving the place for children.”

Ikorodu robbery: Lagos Assembly focuses waterways security

Lagos—Taking a cue from the way dare-devil robbers struck in Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb last week, especially with their use of the waterways as their escape route, the Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday focused on how to tighten security on waterways in the state.

Towards achieving this, the Assembly has mapped out strategies including calling on the state government to explain the whereabouts of the six gunboats purchased by the immediate past administration for Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, in May 2014.

Gunboats are vessels with fitted weapons to tackle waterway crimes.

The Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, however, said it is better to get clarifications from the state government on the whereabouts of the six gunboats purchased by the state government for Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, instead of setting up an ad-hoc committee to probe the whereabouts of the said gunboats.

The House has also called on the Federal Government to direct the Nigerian Navy and other relevant agencies to provide adequate security along the waterways in the state.

Lagos State Waterways Authority was formed following the enactment of the Lagos State Waterways Authority Act 2008, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is the organisation responsible for regulating, developing and managing all aspects of the waterways of Lagos State and apart from the road, the Lagos waterways transport over two million people.

Moving a motion on the robbery incident, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, during plenary called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to strengthen the Waterways Guard Corps.

He stated that the corps should be supported to properly carry out their functions as enshrined in the Lagos State Waterways Agency decree in 2008, and that the two helicopters purchased for LASWA should be made functional.

The House, on reverting to the plenary, consequently adjourned till July 15, 2015, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade.

OOU Students Protest, Cry And Yell As They Block Sagamu - Ore Highway

Thousands of grieving Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) students seized the Sagamu – Ilisan stretch of the Lagos – Ore expressway as they stormed the scene of horrific accident which claimed the lives of a dozen of their colleagues last Friday.

Vehicular movement came to abrupt halt on both lanes of the dual carriage way – hordes of travellers were turned back even as they threatened to hauled stones at any truck carrying container.

The students who arrived in four long buses and about three cars had converged to pray at the scene for the repose of their colleagues but emotions took the better part of them as they cried, yelled and cursed the driver that brought the untimely death on the affected students.

Seizing both arms of the expressway at the Ikenne -Ilisan stretch of it, they marched to the site of a factory beside the expressway few meters away from the accident, which they suspect to own the container that crushed students to death.

Eleven students of the state-owned institution died in their bus, said to be conveying them to Ota, Ogun State around mid-day on Saturday, after a container fell off a truck, which was driving against traffic, landed on the bus, killing the students in the process.

What I will do to Boko Haram - Buhari

President Muhammudu Buhari has restated his desire to crush all Boko Haram insurgents following the group’s attacks on Borno and Yobe communities over the last week.

Buhari said his hunger to destroy the group has not been extinguished saying he will use all resources available to the government to kill the insurgents to the last man.

He said: “They are cowards who lack any moral inhibition and any iota of humanity to reason compassionately.” The president said the country or anywhere in the world would not be safe for them because, “they would be hunted down without mercy and compromise.”

Buhari was speaking through a statement issued by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.

The president sympathized with the families of the victims and reassured all Nigerians of his wish to crush the insurgents.

The statement reads: “My government would never tolerate the terrorists’ blackmail, and our security forces would confront the Boko Haram bandits to the last man.

“Make no mistake about it: this government is ever determined to discharge its fundamental duty of protecting the life of its citizens from physical threats from any groups bent on creating chaos, confusion, and on destroying social and economic life of the people.”

The president slamed the terrorists for attacking during the Ramadan period adding that the terrorists were enemies of humanity worldwide.

“No sane people who believes in any god would be destroying the lives of innocent people in cold blood,” he said, adding that terrorists do not represent any religion.

“The president said the pattern of their indiscriminate violence against innocent people shows that they represent nothing else but anarchy and devilry.

“The terrorists are enemies of religion and humanity. No true believers in any God would target worshipers, holy places, or people who are fasting and other innocent Nigerians,”  The statement read.

Like previous warnings by the military and other bodies, Buhari urged residents of the country to be vigilant and report any person acting suspiciously.

Last week it was learnt that a young girl strapped with explosives and sent to a crowded mosque, made a detour and running away to kill only herself.

This recent act of bravery by the young girl has added fuel to the belief that Boko Haram are using unwilling captives in its terror campaign in northeast Nigeria.

Buhari reportedly orders arrest of wife's younger brother for extorting N300m from a businessman

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, President Buhari last Monday June 22nd ordered the arrest of one Musa Yola ( pictured above), said to be the immediate younger brother of his wife, Aisha, for extorting N300 million from an unnamed businessman with a promise to secure an oil bloc for him through his brother-in-law, President Buhari. After finding out what happened, President Buhari reportedly ordered that Musa be brought to him in handcuffs along with the said businessman he duped.

President Buhari is said to have lambasted the man for parting with such a huge sum of money when he knew that he, Buhari, will never participate in any fraudulent activity. He ordered the SSS officers attached to the villa to thoroughly investigate the matter and also ensure that the Businessman's money is refunded.

A source in the SS who spoke on condition of anonymity said Musa has since returned the businessman's money and has been released on bail.

NY prison escapee shot twice and captured alive by state trooper

David Sweat, the surviving prisoner on the run in New York, has been shot and captured alive two miles from the Canadian border.

He was shot twice in the torso after an officer patrolling the area spotted him brazenly jogging down the road wearing head-to-toe camouflage.

Sergeant Jay Cook, a 21-year veteran, got out his vehicle to question the man before recognizing Sweat. Told to stop, Sweat broke into a run. When he got near a line of trees, almost vanishing from sight, Cook opened fire.

Sweat was treated by first responders at the scene then transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center, a small hospital in Malone, New York, just 40 miles from Clinton Correctional Facility, where he broke free on June 6.
At 6.25pm, Sweat, with an IV in his arm, was wheeled out of the emergency unit in a stable condition and placed in an ambulance bound for the larger Albany Medical Center, 200 miles south.

The ambulance, with a heavy escort of state police vehicles, left eight minutes later. Local residents cheered as he left. 'We got you b*****d,' shouted one woman.

Sweat's capture comes two days after his fellow fugitive, double killer Richard Matt, was shot dead by police after leaving a clumsy trail of candy wrappers and liquor bottles in his wake as they fled authorities.

It is believed they were using black pepper stolen from hunting cabins to throw police dogs off their scent.

Addressing reporters on Sunday night, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: 'The nightmare is finally over.'

Photo: 18 year old SA teen burnt to death by her friends

According to a report by SA newspaper Sowetanlive, 18 year old Boitumelo Dlamini was taken by four girls into a car, driven to a bush where they poured petrol on her and burnt her to death. One of the girls is the ex-girlfriend of the boy she's dating. Her charred body was found in the bush in Klipgat, North West, on Thursday June 25th.

Boitumelo's boyfriend's ex-girlfriend and three of her friends have been arrested for the crime and are facing murder charges and kidnapping.

Boitumelo , 18, a Grade 12 pupil at Elepsa Secondary School, became romantically involved with Tokelo Makalepho, 24, from her village, six months ago.

Boitumelo's sister, Nono Dlamini, 26, alleged Makalepho's former girlfriend was jealous and could not stand that Makalepho was dating Boitumelo.

"She constantly intimidated my sister and threatened her," said Nono, speaking on behalf of her family. My sister died because she was beautiful and doing matric."

Nono said Boitumelo's friends said that on Thursday they saw her get into a car after school.

They did not recognise the vehicle.

"We got worried when she did not return home. Later we received a call to say she was dead. We understand that they took her into the car, drove with her to a bush in Klipgat and then poured petrol on her and burned her." Nono said

Tumi, as she was affectionately called by her family, had dreams of being a crime investigator.

She was a dedicated pupil whose subjects included history, life orientation, life sciences, English and Afrikaans.

"She was a loving person, she did not want people to get hurt," her sister said. "She always smiled and was very kind."

According to Makalepho, his ex told him she will only accept their break-up if he promised to date ugly women who already have children. She also allegedly told him the new woman must not have a matric certificate.

"She was angry that I dumped her with a baby," Makalepho said yesterday. "I never thought she can do this, I'm traumatised."

Makalepho and his ex have a 19-month-old daughter.

"I don't feel that my daughter is safe with her anymore. I dumped her because she cheated on me, she cannot blame me for her failures," he said.

North West police spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko said four people were arrested.
They will appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court today.

Will you support gay rights in Nigeria?

Now that the US has demonstrated its commitment to equality before the law, by ensuring same-sex couples can now marry in all 50 states of the confederate following its historic Supreme Court’s ruling which gave marriage equality as a constitutional right throughout the country one will wonder if this trend will find its way to Nigeria.

Gay-MarriageIn Nigeria,  Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons are still facing legal and social challenges only peculiar to their community. Here, same-sex sexual activity is not only illegal, it is a punishable offence.

According to the stipulations of  Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in Nigeria,  offenders are to face 14 years’ imprisonment , and the punishment isdeath by stoning in the twelve northern states that have adopted Sharia law , which applies to all Muslims and to those who have voluntarily consented to application of the Sharia courts in the region.

Nigeria has been criticized severely by civil rights organizations, as well as the United Nations, for failing to uphold, and violating, the rights of LGBT people but this has not changed the cultural disposition of its people to the topic.

However, the golden question is, can you ever imagine same-sex becoming a way of life that Nigerians will one day come to terms with?

Some Nigerians view on the topic...

OOU Students: 3 families collect bodies for burial

ABEOKUTA—Three of the 12 bereaved families of students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, and the driver, who lost their lives in an accident along Sagamu-Benin Expressway, have buried their loved ones.

Vanguard gathered that the family of the driver of the bus, Lukman Adekeye, who was crushed in the accident, was first to collect his body for burial according to Islamic rites.

It was further gathered that the families of two students, identified as Dare Olatunji and Aminat Adebayo, who had gone to the school to fill post-UTME form, but died in the accident on their way back home, have collected their bodies and buried them.

It would be recalled that a container fell off the bed of a truck and landed on a bus, which was conveying passengers from Lagos Garage, Ijebu-Ode, to Sango-Ota, leaving all the passengers, except one, dead.

Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Ogun State, Okikiola Ogunsola, described the incident as tragic.

He identified the victims as Odubanku Oluwadamilola, Political Science (200L), Ogunnoiki Mariam, History (100L), Aribiola Elizabeth, Bio-Chemistry (100L), Pampam Latifat, Chemical Science (100L), Asade Ibukun, Law (200L).

Meanwhile, the Students Union Government, SUG, has declared today as Black Monday in the school.

The students’ leaders in the state said they had agreed that lectures and other activities be suspended in all the campuses in the state.

Pastor gives out 22 cars, others at birthday

Abuja – The Senior Pastor of Champions Royal Assembly, Kubwa, Abuja, Joshua Iginla, on Sunday gave out 22 cars and millions of naira ranging from N50,000 to N500,000.

The pastor, who celebrated his birthday and that of his wife at the service, also unveiled 33 book titles written by him.

Presenting the cars, among which were 10 SUV cars to the beneficiaries, Iginla challenged the well-to-do in the society to assist the less-privileged.

The pastor, who said that he had tasted poverty and knew how it felt, said the less-privileged of today could become important personalities tomorrow.

“My birthday is all about giving to the needy. What I do here is just 10 per cent of what I do secretly.

“I don’t give to show up; I give to teach people and to provoke them to give.

“I have many people on scholarship, I have widows on my payroll, we have rescued prostitutes and empowered them with skills acquisition programmes, I have orphans I am taking care of.

“I have schools of the handicapped that we have been assisting and the physically-challenged students irrespective of their religions. Gospel is practical, not only spiritual,” he said.

Iginla said this was the third time that he would be giving out all his cars without leaving any one behind for himself.

Unveiling the books, Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue, commended Iginla for his humility and hard work in writing the books.

Ortom, who recalled that he was a school drop out and later a motor park tout in Gboko, said God made him Governor of Benue in spite of the “political persecution” he suffered.

“At this time in my country’s history that there is dearth of leadership, I commit myself to lead with the fear of God that will translate to equity, integrity, justice and fairness.

“I will strive to unite the people of this country,” he said.

The occasion was attended by Senators Grace Bent, Anthony Kila and Effiong Bob, Onyeka Onwenu, Tope Alabi and Chris Morgan.

There were also 16 Nollywood actors who attended the service, including Zack Orji, Francis Duru, Alex Usifo and Fathia Balogun, six of whom were beneficiaries of the car gifts. (NAN)
